BUTTONWILLOW, CA – Larry Mason and Team LMR set a goal at the beginning of the season to win both the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) California Sports Car Club Region and Southern Pacific Division Championships as well as qualify and compete at the National Championship Runoffs. At the conclusion of the final race of the season in October, all three goals were met. Although the Runoffs didn’t end well for Mason, the rest of the season was remarkable with seven pole positions, nine victories, and three track records. The championships are especially gratifying for the fact that this was the first year that Mason and Team LMR took all of the race car preparation in-house.
These were Mason’s first championships in the aforementioned region and division of the SCCA. Mason raced at diverse tracks this year such as Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Willow Springs International Raceway, Buttonwillow Raceway Park, Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, Inde Motorsports Ranch and Auto Club Speedway. Four podiums in the SCCA US Majors Series Western Conference were some of the highlights of the year along with a couple of overall victories. At Chuckwalla, Mason was the fastest driver on the track on Saturday of all the classes competing. All of Mason’s finishes were in the top five this year.
A major contributor to the team’s success was Tom from Auto Diagnostic Services. This was the first time they had worked together in years and continued their winning ways as they had done previously. Polar supplied the wireless heart rate monitors which allowed Mason to fine tune his fitness routine outside of the race car to be able to withstand the rigors within it. Numerous other marketing partners played a pivotal role in Mason’s and the team’s success including: The Fiberglass Body, Jim Webb Motorsports, Performance Plus and Bell Helmets.
